When bringing home a new puppy, there are a few things we all know will be involved, like endless cuddles. However, there are also many things new puppy owners learn as they go. Here is a list of 6 things nobody tells you before getting a puppy:

1. You and your pup will understand each other.

Although we may not have a conversation with our puppies, sometimes it will certainly feel like it! You and your pup will grow to have a deep understanding of each other’s moods and behaviors. Your dog will also pick up on certain words that will always get them excited. So be prepared to no longer carelessly say words like “walk.”

2. No more staying out late.

Once you have your new puppy, you will always need to be around to feed them, walk them, and give them lots of attention. You may see some strong impacts on your social life once your puppy arrives. The excellent news is that puppies love new adventures and need to be socialized, so if the environment is safe and positive for your puppy, bring them along!

3. They have puppy teeth that fall out just like humans!

Don’t be alarmed if you find a tooth here and there while your pup is growing. This is normal. Make sure you have lots of chew toys around to help them through this phase as their new teeth come in.

4. You may feel like a bad puppy parent at times.

Training a new puppy comes with its ups, downs, and even failures. Sometimes you feel like you are doing a bad job, but this is perfectly normal. Setbacks do not mean you’re a bad pup parent. They should only act as a reminder to be patient with yourself and your puppy.

5. You will need a plan for pet sitters.

Make sure you have trusted family or friends to watch over your pup if you ever have to be away. If you plan to hire a pet-sitter for these times, make sure you start looking before you ever need one. You don’t want to feel rushed to pick the right person when a situation comes up where you need one.
