Essential Kitten Supplies for New Pet Parents

TLC Pet Food shares their list of all the different kitten supplies you will need to be ready for the arrival of your new kitten.

There is so much excitement leading up to the arrival of a new kitten that it is easy to forget all the supplies you will need before they come home. It is essential to prepare ahead of time so bringing home your new friend can be as fun and stress-free as possible. You will want to have the following supplies ready for your kitty’s arrival:

  • Food and Water Dishes
  • Food
  • Litter Box & Litter
  • Collar
  • Kitty Bed
  • Kitten Carrier
  • Toys
  • Identification Tag
  • Scratching Post

Food and Water Dishes

Using non-porous and easy to clean bowls such as stainless steel or ceramic will help keep bacteria from forming and your kitty from chewing their dishes. Remember to wash your kitten’s dishes frequently and have fresh water available.

Food

Talk to your breeder about what food they are currently feeding. Ideally, you want to provide the same food for a smooth transition from kennel to home. If you are unsure of how much to feed your kitten, check out our feeding calculator.

Litter Box and Litter

Your kitten will need a litter box, safe kitten litter, and all necessary cleaning supplies such as a scoop or strainer. Choose a litter box that is the appropriate size for your type of cat; you will want your package to be roomy so your cat does not make a mess when using their litter box.

Collar

Choose a collar that is appropriate for the size of your kitten. Kittens grow fast, so check the collar’s fit regularly and adjust when needed. Test to make sure the collar won’t slip over your kitty’s head. If you can fit two fingers comfortably between the collar and your cat’s, you have found the perfect balance.

Kitty Bed

A pet bed provides a sense of security and comfort for your kitten. Having a designated place for your kitten’s bed will help make them feel at home. Choose a mattress that has a removable and washable cover that cannot easily be scratched.

Kitten Carrier

A kitten carrier is a great way to give your kitten its place and makes traveling much more accessible. Please make sure the crate you buy for your kitty gives them enough room to lie down, stand up, and turn all the way around, as this will make them feel safe and secure.

Toys

Playtime is an important time for you and your kitten to bond. Choose toys for your kitty like you would for a baby. Make sure there are no sharp edges, small parts that can be easily swallowed and contain no toxic or hazardous materials.

Identification Tag

If you plan on allowing your cat to go outside, even if it is just in your backyard, always make sure your kitten is wearing an identification tag. It should have your kitten’s name and your contact information on it.

Scratching Post

You will want to give your little kitten an outlet for their scratching, or else your furniture will pay for it. Providing your kitty with a scratching post is essential to keep their mind occupied and help them get out their need to scratch.
